Jin Presents at National Chinese Education Conference
Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages & Literature, participated in the National Chinese Education Conference on literacy of Chinese language, at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, from March 7-9. As a plenary speaker she presented on “Component Skills of Chinese Literacy: Character Recognition and Reading Comprehension.”
This conference is one of the major conferences in the field for K-16 Chinese language teachers. Jin’s talk focused on three areas of character recognition and its relationship to Chinese reading comprehension: the role of character and word recognition in literacy development; theoretical and empirical research in Chinese character recognition and second language reading comprehension and their pedagogical implications; and best practices of character teaching and learning in Chinese as a foreign language.
