A CBSNews.com article, "Primary Collars Updated," examined examples of presidential candidates successfully using attack ads against opponents that incorporated barbs originally launched during primary races. Several of these were from a blog written by Philip Klinkner, James S. Sherman Associate Professor of Government and Associate Dean of Students. Klinkner referenced both President Lyndon Johnson's 1964 ad quoting several Republicans calling Barry Goldwater a lunatic and President Richard Nixon's 1972 ad that quoted Hubert Humphrey criticizing George McGovern's plan to cut defense spending.

Commenting on the new governor of New York, Klinkner was also quoted in a Gannett News Service article that appeared in numerous newspapers around the country including the Detroit Free Press, Westchester County's The Journal News and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. In articles whose titles ranged from "Paterson gets mixed reviews as next N.Y. governor" to "N.Y. lawmakers confident in Lt. governor's abilities," Klinkner said that Paterson has a reputation as, "a very smart, decent guy. He has a great biography. Blind, able to overcome that and rise very high in state government. ... It takes some talent to succeed in New York state politics."
