In the last week, Cheng Li, William R. Kenan Professor of Government, has been interviewed on several radio shows recently and has been quoted in a newspaper article, all focused on the police shooting of farmers in Dongzhou, a seaside village near Hong Kong, who were protesting the loss of their farmland and access to fishing grounds without compensation.

Li participated in live interviews on the BBC World Service "Today" program on December 10, Voice of America "Radio News" on December 12 and "Radio Free Asia" on December 12 to discuss the issue of police crackdowns on social protests. On December 13, Li gave an interview to "The World Tonight" on BBC Radio Four to discuss a letter written by Chinese intellectuals condemning the shooting of the protestors in Dongzhou. Li was also quoted in a Los Angeles Times article titled "China Detains Police Official" on December 12. Li commented on President Hu Jintao's detaining of the local police captain following the shooting. "Hu Jintao has to take such a step because the catch phrase of his administration is 'social harmony' or 'social justice,' whereas social protests reflect social injustice."

Li also participated in an interview with Voice of America on December 9 for a year-end story on Marxism in China today.
