Mike DiMare '14 scored with 59 seconds left in the sudden-victory overtime period to lift Hamilton College to a 6-5 win against Curry College in a non-conference game at Curry's Max Ulin Rink on Dec. 31.
DiMare finished the afternoon with career highs of four assists and five points. He leads the team with nine helpers and 15 points. The last Hamilton player with at least four assists and five points in a game was Joe Houk, who had four assists and six points in a 10-7 win at the University of New England on Jan. 29, 2011.
Anthony Scarpino '12, who was credited with the assist on DiMare's game-winner, posted three goals and a career-high five points. The hat trick is Scarpino's fourth with the Continentals, and his first this season.
Pat Curtis '15 and Bryan Kelly '12 chipped in one goal and one assist apiece, and Sam Choate '12 added an assist for Hamilton. Joe Quattrocchi '14 turned aside 41 shots, including one in overtime.
Payden Benning, Ian DeLong and Connor Hendry recorded one goal and one assist each for the Colonels. Derek Mohney made 22 saves before he was pulled with 7:52 left in the third period. Luc Montoni replaced Mohney and didn't face a shot on goal until DiMare's in overtime. Curry's win streak was snapped at seven games.
The Continentals (4-4-1 overall) held a 2-1 lead after two periods thanks to a pair of power-play goals by Scarpino. The teams combined to score seven goals in a wild third period during which the lead changed hands twice.
Curry (7-2-0) tied the score at 7:21 of the third, and took a 3-2 lead at 10:37 while the teams skated 4-on-4. Hamilton regained the lead with three goals in just 81 seconds. Scarpino started the spurt with his team-high eighth goal at 10:47. Kelly put the Continentals in front with his fourth goal with 8:00 left, and Curtis made it 5-3 with his third goal 8 seconds later.
The Colonels responded with two late goals to force overtime. Hendry pulled Curry within one with 3:12 remaining, and Benning tied the score on his 11th goal with 1:02 left after the Colonels pulled Montoni for an extra skater.
Things looked bleak for Hamilton after BJ Lalonde '12 was sent to the penalty box for high-sticking with 2:15 left in overtime. But DiMare and Scarpino came through with the short-handed goal a little more than a minute later. Curry owned a 46-28 shot advantage for the game.
