Adam Morris, a rising junior at Hamilton College, received a stipend from the Ralph E. Hansmann Science Students Support Fund to research parent training techniques to improve treatment for children who have experienced trauma. The Ralph E. Hansmann Science Students Support Fund is given to support research in all sciences and mathematics. His faculty advisor is Assistant Professor of Psychology and clinical psychologist Tara McKee.
Morris's research is part of a long-term project to develop a parent-training program so that parents can gain a better understanding of how to attend to their children following a trauma. This summer he will be conducting literature research and developing a program for later testing. After he has developed a working program, in succeeding years, it will be implemented in the surrounding local area and data will be collected to evaluate its effectiveness. Since most treatments in this area involve focusing primarily on the child while providing the parent with an informational pamphlet, the goal of this research project is to advance the treatment of traumatized children by creating a structured, empirically-based program for parents that will complement current individualized treatment of the child.
Morris, a graduate of Remsen Central School, is majoring in psychology. He is the son of Thomas and Jean Morris of Fairchild Road in Remsen.
