Hamilton’s Counseling Center has started the academic year with a new home and expanded resources. The Center has moved to 100 College Hill Road, between Bristol Campus Center and Skenandoa.

“This has been an exciting start to the year for the Counseling Center. We moved to accommodate the addition of a new staff member, which was partially a response to increased demand,” said Counseling Center Director David Walden.

Walden reports that the Center saw more than 480 students last year and its demand has gone up 103 percent over the last three years.

New services include peer counselors who can assist students who are navigating a difficult time, making a hard decision or simply need to talk. They’re available Mondays through Thursdays from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturdays, from 3 to 6 p.m. and every night from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Also new is 24/7/365 access to counselors by phone for students who are in distress or need immediate support.  This access extends over breaks and covers students engaged in off-campus study.

In addition, expanded group therapy experiences will focus on personal growth, skill development, and peer support and biofeedback services are aimed at helping students relax and reduce anxiety.

Walden is enthusiastic about the Center’s new home. “The new space is a great fit- we have room for our new staff member, our Peer Counselors, a dedicated group therapy room, a relaxation room featuring biofeedback, and we will soon have an art therapy space,” he said. “We are starting to broaden our services to focus on wellness, and our new space reflects that shift in what we are offering the community.”
