As part of Hamilton College's Fallcoming celebration, NPR commentator/author Frank Deford will give the keynote lecture on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel, followed by a book signing and reception at 9 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Frank Deford's work has appeared in virtually every medium. In print, he has returned to Sports Illustrated, where his byline originally appeared from 1962-89. On radio, he may be heard as a commentator on NPR's Morning Edition. On television, he is a regular correspondent on the HBO show, RealSports with Bryant Gumbel. The author of 13 books, Deford has a wonderful sense of humor and will share his experience as an author, journalist and commentator. His latest novel is An American Summer. Two of his books – the novel, Everybody's All-American, and Alex: The Life of a Child, his memoir about his daughter who died of cystic fibrosis – have been made into movies.
As a journalist Deford was recently given the National Magazine Award for profiles, for his story on Bill Russell. He has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters, and was voted by his peers as U.S. Sportswriter of the Year six times. In broadcast Deford has won both an Emmy and a George Foster Peabody Award.
For 15 years he served as national chairman of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and is now chairman emeritus. A graduate of Princeton University, Deford has taught there in American Studies, and has spoken at more than 60 American colleges and universities.
