Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was interviewed for an American Public Media Marketplace feature on inflation, broadcast on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

The segment titled “Inflation: Come out, come out wherever you are” discussed the Federal Open Market Committee meeting taking place Oct. 29-30 and the likelihood that inflation would be on the agenda. Although “inflation” often has a negative connotation for consumers, some inflation is desirable, according to economists.

In the Marketplace segment, Owen, a former Federal Reserve economist, explained, “The type of concerns that people have about inflation are usually associated with inflation that’s unpredictable, and inflation that’s moving around quite a bit.”

Owen says moderate inflation can help the labor market because companies dealing with inflation may be able to hire more workers.
