Jonathan Mallinson
Jonathan Mallinson, professor of French at the University of Oxford and Fellow of Trinity College, will present a lecture, "Reading Candide Today: From Voltaire to Cormac McCarthy," on Monday, March 30, at 4:10 p.m. in the Hamilton College Science Center, room 3024. The lecture is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Offices of the President and Dean of Faculty and the French Department.

Voltaire's Candide, first published 250 years ago, was one of the most successful and widely read narratives of the 18th century. In his presentation, Mallinson will examine some of the reasons why the popularity and relevance of Candide remain undiminished even in today's society. He will also suggest parallels between Candide and a recent, best-selling novel, The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

In addition to teaching French at the University of Oxford, Mallinson is also the general editor of the monograph series, "Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century" as well as acting director of the Voltaire Foundation, an 18th-century research center in the University of Oxford. Mallinson's most recent publication is a translation of de Françoise Graffigny's novel, Letters of a Peruvian Woman. His research interests include 17th- and 18th-century theater and prose fiction.
