Himilce Novas, acclaimed author, poet, and playwright, will give a lecture, "New Immigrants and Bilingual Education," as part of the Black and Latin Student Union's 1999 Cultural Awareness Series. The talk will take place on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Hamilton College Science Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

Fleeing Castro's Cuba with her parents in 1960, Ms. Novas settled in New York City and served as an editor for many national news publications and magazines such as The New York Times, Connoisseur, and The Christian Science Monitor. In 1972, Joseph Papp published her play entitled "Free This Day: A Trial In Seven Exhibits," in his Shakespeare Festival Journal Scripts. Regarded as a social and literary benchmark, her play was performed by theater companies across the nation.

Ms. Novas rose quickly through the ranks of publishing and wrote three novels while continuing to write poems and other plays. Her latest work, entitled Everything You Need To Know About Latino History, was published in 1994 and has received critical acclaim. Currently, Ms. Novas is writing and developing a multimedia educational package about Latino art and culture for The Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

The 1999 Cultural Awareness Series sponsored by the Black and Latino Student Union focuses on issues of race in global Black and Latino communities. The lecture is sponsored by the Hamilton College Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center and the Black and Latin Student Union.
