Hamilton College will welcome back more than 1,500 alumni and their guests when it hosts its annual Reunion Weekend, this year on Thursday-Sunday, May 31-June 3. An all-Kirkland Reunion will take place simultaneously, with 250 graduates of Kirkland College returning to campus. Reunion weekend will feature Alumni Colleges, building dedications, campus tours and traditional ceremonies.
The Reunion keynote lecture will feature Christie K '72 and Tom Vilsack '72, former first lady and two-term governor of Iowa. It will take place on Friday, June 1, at 8 p.m. in the Chapel. Tom Vilsack formally launched his candidacy for the Democratic Party's nomination for U.S. president in the 2008 election in November, but ended his bid in February. Christie Vilsack made strides in advancing the cause of literacy, a mission informed by her years as an English and journalism teacher.
Highlights of this year's reunion will include an alumni college featuring Hamilton Chemistry professor George Shields and his student researchers on "Drug Design and Global Warming: Undergraduates Making A Difference;" "Assessing the value of a Hamilton Education," with Professor of Sociology Dan Chambliss; and "Baseball behind the Scenes: The Hall of Fame, the Village of Cooperstown and the Art of Publishing Baseball Books," with Bruce Markusen '87.
The college will honor Patsy Couper, wife of the late Hamilton trustee Dick Couper '44, when she is presented with the Bell Ringer Award at the annual meeting of the Alumni Association on Saturday in the Chapel. The Bell Ringer is presented each year in recognition of contributions made to the College, its alumni and the community.
The All-Kirkland Reunion Conversation with Kirkland College President Samuel Fisher Babbitt and a film showing of Indomitable Spirits: The Road Less Taken, will take place on Saturday, June 2, at 3:30 p.m. in Wellin Hall.
An Alumni College presented by the Christian A. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Global Political Theory Ned Walker '62, titled "The New Middle East: A Sad Day for America,?" is scheduled for Saturday, June 2, at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel.
The Emerson Gallery will feature two exhibits. Inspirations features artwork by Kirkland College alumnae and Anatoly Averev (1931-86) features watercolors, paintings and drawings by the Russian artist. Hours are Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Also during the weekend, reunion classes will hear a state of the college address from President Joan Stewart, celebrate at class dinners, hold class meetings and participate in a Service of Remembrance for deceased alumni.
