Associate Professor of Religious Studies Richard Seager was interviewed for the Shreveport (La.) Times about Buddhists practicing the Soka Gakkai International tradition in the Shreveport area. Soka Gakkai is characterized by an activism for world peace and as being one of the most evangelistic of the Eastern traditions.
"It's very attractive because they are activistic people and they tend to be outgoing and positive," said Seager, who has researched Soka Gakkai. "It really is all about being yourself. It is very accepting of gays and human differences and celebrates all that." Seager is the author of Buddhism in America (Columbia,1999), a comprehensive history of the religion in the U.S.
