Son Honors Fatherwith New Teaching Award at Hamilton College


A Hamilton College alumnus has established a newaward in memory of his father to recognize outstanding teaching and scholarshipat the liberal arts college.

The inaugural presentation of the award will be made at the annual Class andCharter Day Convocation on Friday, May 8, at 3 p.m.

"The John R. Hatch Class of 1925 Excellence in Teaching Award" was establishedby Alfrederic S. Hatch, a 1958 Hamilton graduate, in memory of his father, whograduated from Hamilton in 1925. It will support an annual prize for atenure-track faculty member who has been employed by the college for fewer thanfive years, and who demonstrates superior teaching, high-quality scholarlyresearch, and significant and positive impact on students.

The fund is part of an initiative called the Presidential Fund for FacultyInnovation, which was made possible by a challenge grant from the Fred L.Emerson Foundation in Auburn, N.Y., and a gift from Mr. Hatch.

"This award signifies the value Hamilton places on teaching and scholarship,"said President Eugene M. Tobin. "We are exceptionally proud of our faculty andare grateful to the Hatch family for providing us with the means to recognizethe tremendous effort Hamilton professors put forth in support of theirstudents."

John Hatch possessed a life-long fondness for Hamilton. As a student, he waselected to the college's sophomore, junior and senior service and leadershiporganizations, and was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity. He served ascaptain of the soccer and basketball teams and was a member of the varsitybaseball team. Following his graduation from Hamilton in 1925, Mr. Hatch begana long career with the New York Telephone Company. Both his father (class of1901) and his son (class of 1958) were Hamilton graduates, and threegrandchildren, one of whom graduated in 1982 and two of whom are currentlyenrolled, attended the college.

In addition to the newly established Hatch Award for Excellence in Teaching,Hamilton will award The Class of 1963 Excellence in Teaching Award to a tenuredmember of the faculty at the Class and Charter Day Convocation.
