"Diversity" is a hotly debated topic on college campuses across the U.S.  A perpetual conflict exists between those who feel that actively seeking out diversity in college admissions benefits both students of color and the general campus population and others who view affirmative action as detrimental and racist to all involved, including those it is meant to help.

Syndicated columnist Walter E. Williams, who is an economics professor at George Mason University, will address this topic on Thursday, Feb. 7,  at 7 p.m. in the Chapel at Hamilton College.  His lecture, which is free and open to the public, is titled "The Hypocrisy of Diversity: How Much Can Discrimination Explain?"

Williams in a recent column writes, "Diversity implies toleration of difference among people no matter what that difference might be…what's called for and practiced by college administrators … is anything but a defense of individual rights…diversity is simply the old racism in a new guise."

Widely known for guest hosting the Rush Limbaugh radio talk show and for his conservative columns, Williams is the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He writes for publications such as Newsweek, American Economic Review and National Review  and is the author of several books. He serves on boards of organizations such as the Hoover Institution and is often called upon to testify to Congress on topics including labor policy and taxation and spending.
