Assistant Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas wrote the introduction for the re-publication of Grenadian writer and educator Albert Marryshow’s Cycles of Civilization: A Refutation of General Jan Smuts Racist Theory.
Marryshow wrote the document in 1917 in response to General Jan Smuts, the South African statesman and early supporter of racial segregation and white minority rule.
In his introduction Westmaas examines the lineage of scientific racism in which Smuts was an important proponent and the anti-colonial framework from which Marryshow’s rebuff to Smuts was stimulated.
