Among strides made by the movement, Stevens tells Insight, is that "it has developed almost entirely outside the purview of education professionals and largely without the approval of education 'experts.'" A central focus of his work, Stevens says, is the diversity of homeschoolers. "Historically, there have been essentially two homeschool movements - a left-libertarian one that inherits the individualist ethic of the 1960s and 1970s, and a religious-conservative one with strong connections to the broader religious right."
