Colby College scored three goals in the third period and the visiting Mules went on to a 5-3 win against Hamilton College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game played at Russell Sage Rink on Feb. 7.

Hamilton (8-11-2 overall, 3-9-2 NESCAC) has lost four in a row after a six-game unbeaten streak in January. Colby (9-7-3, 6-5-2) snapped a 3-3 tie with a goal at 10:28 of the third period during a 5-on-3 power play. The Mules added an insurance goal with 7:39 left in regulation.

Amy Allen '10, Becky Cairns '11 and Laura DiCarlo '12 posted one goal and one assist each for the Continentals. Meg Shine '10 made 14 of her 27 saves in the third period.

Colby broke the ice and grabbed a 1-0 lead at 12:23 of the first period. DiCarlo tied the score with her first collegiate goal during a power play with 1:19 left in the period. Meredith Bitterman '12 fired a shot from the right circle that was kicked aside and DiCarlo was there to sweep the puck into the net.

Allen gave Hamilton its only lead with her 12th goal at 11:54 of the second period. Cairns passed the puck from the right circle to Allen, who was positioned just left of the crease, and Allen one-timed the puck into the open net. Stephanie Miguel '11 was credited with her 15th assist on Allen's goal. Miguel leads the team with 33 points.

The Mules tied the score again 1:23 later with a power-play goal. Colby was 2-for-11 with the extra skater while the Continentals were 1-for-7. Hamilton held a 15-2 advantage in shots in the second period.

The Mules gained the upper hand at 5:28 of the third period, but the 3-2 lead was brief. Cairns scored her third goal this season on a backhander from the bottom of the right circle 24 seconds later to knot the score for the third time.

Shine was lifted for an extra skater after Colby was whistled for a tripping penalty with 1:32 left. The Continentals skated 6-on-3 for the final 12 seconds after an interference penalty was called on a Mule. However, Hamilton couldn't get another goal in the final 90 seconds of regulation.

The Continentals travel to Utica College for a non-conference game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m.
