Changing yourself radically isn't usually an overnight thing. For 18-year-old Carlos Capellan, it was gradual; so subtle, in fact, that it was a while before he realized how far he'd traveled...
"I learned how to present myself. I used to wear my pants falling off- I started wearing them in the appropriate place," he says...
Carlos went on helping Chia's team at his old school. "It was fun. When I show the kids a new move, I can watch and see a little moment of joy in their faces when they use it." This year Carlos is a freshman at Hamilton College in upstate New York. None of this would have happened without chess and his mentor, Chia. "I learned more lessons from chess about life than about the game. My coach is a great man, and he's been the biggest influence in my life," says Carlos.
