Debra Boutin, professor of mathematics, gave a research presentation "Parameters for Graph Symmetries" at the Center for Communication Research, in La Jolla, Calif. In this talk, Boutin surveyed known and new results on ways of measuring network symmetries. In this survey she not only introduced the audience to various parameters used to quantify symmetries, but showed some of the surprisingly strong connections between them.  More ...

Sally Cockburn, professor of mathematics, presented her paper, "Preimages of Small Geometric Cycles," at the Combinatorics and Optimization Seminar at the University of Ottawa on Jan. 29. This work is part of her ongoing research into measuring the complexity of straight-line representations of networks, in terms their vertex adjacency and edge crossing structures.  More ...

Seven Selected for Clinton Global Initiatives University

Seven Hamilton students have been selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) that will take place in April 1-3 at the University of California, Berkeley. Aleksandra Bogoevska ’17, Andy Chen ’16, Leonard Kilekwang ’16, Alexandru Hirsu ’17, Emily Moschowits ’16, Sharif Shrestha ’17 and Tsion Tesfaye ’16 will attend. Mathletics Team Vies in Putnam Competition

The Hamilton Mathletics Team sat for the William Lowell Putnam exam on Saturday, Dec. 5.  Coached by Associate Professor of Mathematics Andrew Dykstra, the team had trained for the exam throughout the fall semester and consisted of a record-high number of 20 students. The Putnam exam is the most famous undergraduate mathematics competition in the country.  The exam is so challenging that most years the national median score is zero out of 120 possible points  More ...
