Learning Experiences

Learning experiences occupy the center of the framework with three progressively immersive learning levels providing a means for organizing student interaction with the digital. LITS is committed to working with our partners across campus to provide students with learning opportunities for all mindsets that allow them to develop their digital capabilities in support of their educational goals.

Encounter

Professor and Students practice with droneEncounter level learning experiences are about acquiring understanding. At this level, students will be introduced to the framework’s digital focus areas through public lectures and general workshops. Students will gain a basic knowledge of the focus areas, develop an awareness of their underlying mindsets, and discover how algorithmic thinking, analytic thinking, design thinking, inventive thinking, and/or network thinking can relate to their educational goals and career objectives. Upon completing an encounter level learning experience, students will be able to explain in their own words how a digital mindset and its associated skill sets are being applied to challenges common to global societies in the 21st century.

Engage

ClassroomEngage level learning experiences are about developing capabilities. At this level, students will expand their digital abilities through practice-oriented exercises integrated into courses and LITS online learning modules. Students will build their digital proficiencies using concepts and tools from the framework’s digital focus areas, employ methods of problem solving and discovery associated with individual mindsets, and undertake projects incorporating algorithmic thinking, analytic thinking, design thinking, inventive thinking, and/or network thinking that relate to their educational goals or career objectives. Upon completing an engage level learning experience, students will be able to apply a digital mindset and its associated skill sets to a challenge common to global societies in the 21st century.

Extend

Dave Perkins comp sci group 18Extend level learning experiences are about demonstrating fluency. At this level, students will apply advanced digital capabilities to summer research fellowships, independent studies, and senior capstone projects. Students will achieve a mastery of concepts and tools from the framework’s digital focus areas, display fluency in their choice and use of the digital mindsets informing their work, and exemplify the College motto, “know thyself,” by articulating how algorithmic thinking, analytic thinking, design thinking, inventive thinking, and/or network thinking inform their educational goals or career objectives. Upon completing an extend level learning experience, students will be able to share a completed project that creatively draws upon digital technologies to address a challenge common to global societies in the 21st century.
