New Computer This Christmas? Here's How to Get Around in Windows 8
- Ryan Coyle

If you're looking to make the move from that old clunker Windows XP box that's been sitting in your den for something newer and shinier, I have good news. The PC is going through a transformation and right now there are some fantastic deals to be had on some really new and innovative hardware. But you say… there's a problem. I don't know how I feel about this Windows 8 thing. You can't put your finger on it, but you're not sure if you like it.

HillConnect "Winter Cleaning" - Jesse Thomas

Google recently announced an upcoming "winter cleaning," which will result in a minor change to the HillConnect calendar. The appointment slots feature is scheduled to be discontinued on Jan. 4, 2013 and for users with personal Gmail accounts that sync with their mobile device, Google Sync is going to be discontinued on Jan. 30, in favor of new sync methods (IMAP, CalDAV & CardDAV) and mobile apps. This Winter, Beware of Cold Callers - Especially Those Claiming Your Computer Has a Virus
- Ben Thomas

The scam always starts the same way: the phone rings at someone's home, the caller asks for the head of the household, quoting their name and address before saying "I'm calling for Microsoft. We've had a report from your Internet service provider of serious virus problems from your computer." Dire forecasts are made that if the problem is not solved, the computer will become unusable. More Windows 8 - Maureen Scoones

Although ITS has not yet determined the deployment schedule of Windows 8, if you received a new computer over the holidays that is configured with Windows 8, you may want to learn more. A good start is with Ryan's article New Computer This Christmas? Here's How to get around in Windows 8.

If you want to learn more, ITS subscribes to an online training library, Lynda.com, that contains over 1000 video tutorials you can access 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a whole course on Windows 8. Contact Maureen Scoones (mscoones@hamilton.edu, x4178) for an account.
