The following instructions are for College-issued Windows Computers.

All employees using a college-issued Windows computer must check for (and if applicable, run) this upgrade.  We also ask you to check other computers that may be assigned to you - such as computers for temporary employees, secondary machines, etc. This operating system upgrade is required to ensure software features and security versions are up to date, and will also fix any printing issues you may be experiencing.

DOES YOUR MACHINE REQUIRE THE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM UPDATE?
  1. Log into your Windows desktop or laptop. 
  2. Right click on the Start menu and select Search. Enter ‘Software Center’ in the search field and open the app.
  3. In the Software Center, check if Operating Systems has a  (1) next to it as shown in the screenshot below:

  1. Do not click on the update without reading the instructions below first.
  2. If you do not see the (1), no further action is required.
BEFORE YOU INSTALL
  • Your computer MUST BE ON CAMPUS to install this update.  If you are off campus and receive the update, please install it when you return to campus.  If you will not be returning to campus, contact the Help Desk at 315-859-4481 or helpdesk@hamilton.edu for more information.
  • Computers must be plugged in and powered on.
  • A wired internet connection is best. (Wireless connections will slow down the installation process.)
  • Do not close your laptop during installation unless you use a docking station and external monitor.
  • The update will take between 45 to 90 minutes depending on your computer, so plan accordingly. The computer will reboot twice automatically during this process. 
  • You will not be able to use the computer during the installation process.
  • Save your work and log out of all programs before you begin.
INSTALLATION
  1. Log into your Windows desktop or laptop. 
  2. Right click on the Start menu and select ‘Search.’ 
  3. Enter ‘Software Center’ in the search field and open the app.
  4. In the left column, click on ‘Operating Systems.’
  5. Click on the upgrade package Windows 10 21H2 Upgrade- NBL
  6. Click on the Install button and then confirm the installation
  7. The installation should start running(and can be left unattended), will take between 45-90 minutes and will automatically reboot twice. 
POST INSTALLATION
  1. On the first login, you may see the Microsoft welcome message(s).
  2. When you launch a Microsoft office product, it may ask you to re-register. Click on “register over the internet.” A new window should pop up with that option pre-filled in. 
  3. If you've installed any printers from the printx-old server, remove the printers with the  -old suffix. Contact the Help Desk at 315-859-4481 or helpdesk@hamilton.edu for more information. 

Note: The software package will continue to show up in the Operating Systems tab in the Software Center but will now say “installed” to the far right of the window. DO NOT re-install the update.

IF THE INSTALLATION FAILS AT ANY STAGE
  1. Don’t try again.  LITS will be monitoring installations and will follow up for any that are unsuccessful.
