Assignment Description

Students discover and discuss the scholarly conversation and the philosophies guiding citation and attribution. In advance of an in-class discussion co-facilitated by Alex Wohnsen, research librarian, and Jennifer Ambrose, Writing Center director, students view a video called Everything is a Remix, read the Hamilton College Honor Code, and explore materials from the Creative Commons website. The class begins with examples of sampling in music followed by a discussion of what that sample does to further the artist's objectives, how that relates to citation and attribution, and how that can be done in creative as well as academic work.
