Pre-Assignments

MEDICAL & ACCOMMODATION PRE-ASSIGNment HOUSING

The medical and accommodation pre-assign process is designed to meet housing needs of students who have a documented medical condition or other significant life circumstance that require specific housing accommodations.

If one’s request is approved, the student will be offered appropriate housing based on their need and will be assigned housing prior to the specialty (substance-free and co-op) and general housing selections.

Examples of Possible Pre-Assigns

  • Medical conditions that require a private or semi-private bathroom
  • Short or long term circumstances in which students need to be on the first floor of a building (i.e.- physical disability or surgery that impedes one’s ability to walk up stairs)
  • Any medical condition that requires temperature control of one’s room

Process and Timeline

Application (Monday, January 27 - Friday, February 7)

The application form for medical and accommodation pre-assign housing is available online. Two of the pages are to be completed by the applicant, with the other two to be completed by the applicant’s treating physician.  Requests submitted for religious accommodations require a letter from the student and from the religious leader/or other appropriate authority that can comment specifically on the accommodation being requested and the reason it is necessary. The entire application is due to Allen Harrison, assistant dean of students for international students and accessibility by Friday, February 7 at noon. Applications will be accepted after this date but consideration takes time and the Committee cannot guarantee completion of the process prior to the housing selection if applications are late.

***Please provide as much detail as possible on your application***

Request Approval or Denial (Monday, February 8 - Friday, February 21)

Once all applications have been received, a confidential committee of campus administrators with various relevant areas of expertise will determine if each student’s request is necessary and appropriate. By no later than Friday, February 21 each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their request. If the request is accepted the student will be offered one option for housing. If the option is not accepted by the student, the student will participate in the specialty or general housing selection processes. The decision of the committee is final.

**NOTE: Submitting a request does not guarantee approval for pre-assign.

Room Selection

Monday, February 8 - Friday, February 21

If a student’s request is approved they will be offered one housing option based on the medical needs and/or accommodations noted in the application and agreed upon by the committee. Upon the student’s notification of acceptance and housing offer, the student will have until one week to notify the Office of Residential Life if they will accept or decline. Once an offer is accepted, it can not be changed and the student waives their right to participate in any other housing selection process.

If a student fails to accept a housing offer by the deadline, that student will be required to participate in the specialty or general housing selection and will forgo any and all medical pre-assign offers.
