RETURNING TO CAMPUS
Off-Campus Study, Spring 2021 Semester
September 17, 2020
Dear Hamilton Community Members,
I write with the disappointing news that Hamilton must reluctantly suspend its programs in China, France, Spain, New York City, and Washington, D.C., for the spring 2021 semester due to ongoing uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic. I am grateful to those who examined in detail our ability to deliver off-campus programs that would meet the level of precaution, preparedness, and potential for responding effectively to an outbreak that we will continue providing on campus.
Ultimately, we concluded that we are unable to predict positive and safe outcomes in a time of uncertainty, and we are aware that we cannot replicate off campus the infrastructure for testing, monitoring, and caring that we have in place for our students and faculty in Clinton. I very much regret this decision because I know it removes an important academic opportunity that many of our students anticipate, and one that enriches their education immensely.
At this time, many of our third-party partners that provide Hamilton students with study abroad opportunities have not announced their plans for the spring 2021 semester. We are monitoring the situation closely, anticipating some program cancellations. Associated Colleges in China is continuing to plan the summer 2021 study abroad program in Beijing.
We will provide updates as they become available. In the meantime, I encourage students to contact our Off-Campus Study Office with questions and to discuss individual options including, for those planning to study abroad in the spring, deferring participation to the summer or fall (Beijing) or next fall (France and Spain).
