The A. G. Lafley Family Scholarship

The A. G. Lafley Family Scholarship, established by A. G. Lafley, Class of 1969, is awarded with preference given to students who have participated or are participating in a Hamilton-approved study-abroad program.  When possible, recipients should have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Alan George "A.G." Lafley graduated cum laude from Hamilton in 1969 with a double major in history and French.  His plan to pursue a doctorate in European Medieval and Renaissance History at the University of Virginia was interrupted when he was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy and served in Japan during the Vietnam War.  By the time he returned home, his interests had shifted.

A.G. graduated from the Harvard Business School in 1977 with an MBA in Business Administration and immediately joined Procter & Gamble as a Brand Assistant for Joy dish soap.  He rose quickly through P&G's ranks, becoming president and CEO in 2000 and serving in that capacity through 2009.  He was named CEO of the year in 2006 by Chief Executive magazine, and has served on the boards of GE, Legendary Pictures, and Dell.  He was tapped by President Obama in 2011 to join the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

A.G. is a devoted and generous Hamilton Life Trustee, who served as Board Chair from 2008 to 2013.  He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the College in 2012.  He credits his success to flexibility in the face of change: "Change is the only constant in life.  Those who embrace change will win decisively and disproportionately."

A.G. resumed the top leadership position at P&G in May 2013.
