The James and Agnes Kim Scholarship

The James and Agnes Kim P’85 Scholarship was established by Susan Y. Kim, Class of 1985.

Susan Kim, Class of 1985, was a Sociology Major at Hamilton and is the Vice Chairman of Amkor Technology. She is an active philanthropist who sits on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia and the Council of Emeritus Directors of the Philadelphia Orchestra.  In the past, she has served on numerous boards of Directors including the National Constitution Center, The Franklin Institute, The Gesu School, The Shipley School, and EB Games Corp.

Susan has generously donated this scholarship to honor her parents, James, and Agnes Kim. Mr. Kim immigrated to the US in 1955 to study economics at the University of Pennsylvania. After teaching at Villanova University for six years, he founded Amkor Technology in 1968, as an American sales agent for his father’s struggling electronics business in South Korea, Anam Electronics.  From its start selling transistor radios and calculators, Amkor has grown to become a $1.6 billion business and is one of the world’s largest makers of computer chips. Anam is now one of the 20 largest businesses in Korea. James is currently the executive chairman of Amkor Technology, one of the world’s largest providers of contract semiconductor assembly and test services. Agnes is an entrepreneur in her own right. She started selling consumer electronics products from a kiosk in a shopping mall in King of Prussia, PA in 1977. The Electronic Boutique mall kiosks were purchased by GameStop in 2005. Philanthropy toward education is one of the Kim Family’s priorities.
