The Kenneth and Linda Gould Scholarship

The Kenneth and Linda Gould Scholarship was established by Dr. Kenneth Gould, a member of the Class of 1964, and his wife Linda Gould.

This Fund was established by Dr. Kenneth Gould, a member of the Class of 1964, and his wife Linda Gould.

Ken Gould came to College Hill from Philadelphia and majored in Biology to prepare for a career in medicine. He has fond memories of his Hamilton professors, coach Manfred von Schiller, and students, including his soccer teammate Morefe Obele ’65, a Nigerian who, sadly, died while in college. Ken started in goal all four years becoming good friends with his freshman roommate Don McCouch ’64, the man who would serve as Co-Captain with him and was later named an All-American fullback.

Ken’s leadership extended beyond the classroom and soccer pitch, as he became President of TDX fraternity his senior year.

His relationship with Hamilton extended beyond College Hill and prepared him for medical school at Temple, as he wrote, “I had a wonderful junior year summer experience working with A. Reynolds Crane M.D.’29, who mentored me on a research project in which I correlated indeterminate Pap smears with subsequent biopsy pathology. I also aided in autopsies. Both prepared me for future endeavors.”

He met his wife Linda in Vietnam where Ken was teaching in the University of Saigon School of Medicine, following his fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine in Dallas. During his fellowship, he published a journal article defining bacterial causes of Purulent Pericarditis and a seminal article exploring the differential adherence of various bacteria to heart valves. The latter is referenced in many journal articles and books dealing with Bacterial Endocarditis.

Upon returning to the United States, Ken and Linda settled in Southern California, where Ken joined the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. He was honored for his teaching skills and championed his group's effort to limit the inappropriate use of antibiotics. As a specialist in Infectious Diseases, he cared for HIV/AIDS patients and founded his hospital’s HIV Clinic. He also served as Chief of Internal Medicine for a year and was elected to three terms to represent his colleagues at his medical group’s Regional Board of Directors. Prior to his retirement, he was honored by the Internal Medicine Department with the Physician Exceptional Contribution Award in Internal Medicine.

Linda’s astute investing advice afforded them the opportunity to endow this scholarship at Hamilton. At the time of his 50th reunion, Ken reflected, “Hamilton took a young boy and honed his skills so that he could compete in the adult world. It provided a template for independent thinking, and ability to communicate effectively, and confidence to experiment and experience the unknown - a foundation for a successful life.”

Ken and Linda have two wonderful daughters. Jessica is a Medical Doctor specializing in Hospital Medicine (Hospitalist) and Lauren is a freelance art director working in fashion and media.
