The Archibald Longworth Love, Jr. '07 Scholarship

The Archibald Longworth Love, Jr., Class of 1907 Scholarship was established by Harry H. Love, M.D., Class of 1952, and his wife, Martha S. Love, in memory of his father, Archibald Longworth Love, Jr., Class of 1907. It is awarded with preference given to students preparing for careers in medicine or science.

Archibald Longworth Love, Jr.,  a member of the third consecutive generation of Loves to graduate from Hamilton, received numerous awards, including the Hawley Greek Medal and the Chauncey S. Truax Prize Scholarship in Greek. He was the Kirkland Prize orator at this commencement in 1907.

Following graduation, Longworth, sometimes called "Long," went to work for the Houghton-Mifflin Company. In 1920, he joined Carl Zeiss, Inc., where he advanced to an executive level, managing the firm’s New York City office until his retirement. He and his wife, Grace Huntington Rutan, had four children.

Their son, Dr. Harry H. Love, came to Hamilton from Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn. He joined the Emerson Literary Society (E.L.S.), the organization his great uncle, Henry M. Love, Class of 1883, helped to found, and majored in biology and chemistry. Following graduation from Hamilton, he received his medical degree from Western Reserve University in 1956 (now Case Western Reserve University).

Dr. Love married Martha Ann Shelton, a nurse, in 1958. After he completed military service in the United States Air Force, the Loves relocated to New Hartford, NY and he established a surgical practice in Utica, NY. An active volunteer in his community and at Hamilton, Dr. Love served as a board member of the Presbyterian Home for many years, was an Elder and Trustee of the New Hartford Presbyterian Church and served as a trustee of E.L.S. The Loves have three children -- Allan, Daniel and Sarah. In 2017, their granddaughter, Audrey Love, became the sixth consecutive generation of the family to graduate from Hamilton.
