The Mac Bristol ’43 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2010 through gifts received in memory of William M. “Mac” Bristol III, Class of 1943, whose presence and influence on College Hill were indisputable. It is awarded with preference given to students demonstrating leadership through active involvement in extra-curricular activities, as well as exhibiting academic promise.

Accelerating his undergraduate studies as a history major so he could embark on service as a Marine during World War II, William M. “Mac” Bristol’s truncated time on the Hill was none-the-less stellar. His academic achievements earned him election to Quadrangle, DT, Was Los and Pentagon, and his athletic prowess resulted in nine letters in baseball, basketball and football, where he served as team co-captain. He was also a member of Sigma Phi fraternity. Following his military service, Mac joined the family business, Bristol-Myers Squibb, from where he retired as a chief executive officer in 1972.

In the years following his graduation, Mac’s unfailing love for his alma mater and support for all things Hamilton touched every area of campus. He gave with his heart, whether sharing his time or his resources to enrich the College and its people. Mac supported numerous endowed funds, building projects and the Annual Fund. He was a leadership volunteer in a class by himself, including service as a member of the Alumni Council, campaign leadership teams and the College’s Board of Trustees, to which he was elected in 1965 and served 13 years as chairman (1977-90).

Mac died in August 2009.
