The Rice Family Scholarship

The Rice Family Scholarship was established in 2011 by John G. Rice, Class of 1978.

John G. Rice, Class of 1978, is a second generation Hamiltonian who graduated with a concentration in economics. While a student, he was an active member of Psi Upsilon, played men’s lacrosse, and was elected to “Doers and Thinkers,” the rising sophomore honor society, and Pentagon, the rising senior honor society. Since leaving the Hill, John has risen through the ranks at General Electric, holding multiple positions over the years, relocating and traveling extensively for the company. He is currently Vice Chairman of GE and President and CEO of GE Global Growth and Operations based in Hong Kong. He has served on Hamilton’s Board of Trustees since 1999 and is currently a member of the Planning and Honorary Degree committees. A Career Center volunteer, he has provided numerous Hamilton students with employment opportunities at GE.

John’s father, Charles, graduated from Hamilton in 1950 with a major in history. He came to the Hill after a year of service with the U.S. Coast Guard. He joined Delta Upsilon, became its house steward, and represented it on the Interfraternity Council. Post-Hamilton, at the time of the Korean War, Charlie returned to active duty with the Coast Guard, serving as a lieutenant (j.g.) until 1953. On December 21 of that year, while a law school student at Cornell University, he married Nancy S. Garnaus, a teacher, in New York City.

After obtaining his LL.B. degree from Cornell in 1955, Charlie joined the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division in Washington, D.C., as a trial attorney. Two years later, he moved to New York City to practice law with the firm of Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine. In 1961, he began his long career with Mobil Oil as antitrust counsel in its North American Division. During the 1970s and 1980s, having been promoted to assistant general counsel, he oversaw the corporation's legal matters connected with significant acquisitions, including the acquisition of  International Paper. He retired as assistant general counsel for antitrust and litigation in 1990. An ever-faithful and generously supportive alumnus, Charlie Rice passed away in November 2009.

John and his wife, Cammie, care deeply about educational opportunities for urban youth and established this scholarship to ensure that future generations of students will have access to a Hamilton education. John’s mother, Nancy, is also a strong supporter of this award.
