The Fielding Family Scholarship

The Fielding Family Scholarship was established in 2006 by Donna and Ron Fielding, parents of Daniel Fielding, Class of 2007.

Ron Fielding earned his B.A. from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. It was St. John's generous financial aid package that enabled him to attend the school. The third of six children from a modest-income home outside of Boston, when his top two colleges didn't offer him enough financial aid, Fielding reluctantly applied to St. John's on the day of his high school graduation and was given a full scholarship.

At the heart of St. John’s College undergraduate program is a liberal arts curriculum focused on the most important books and ideas of Western civilization. The school’s “Great Books Program” is centered on 130 classic texts covering theology, history, philosophy, economics, political theory, and natural science, the program still drives the school’s Socratic-style discussions between students and professors.

Ron went on to earn both an MA in Economics and an MBA in Finance from the University of Rochester. After seven years in commercial banking, Ron founded Fielding Management, which grew from a single mutual fund with $600,000 in assets into a portfolio of 18 municipal bond funds with combined assets of over $30 billion at its peak. Fielding sold his company to Oppenheimer Funds in 1996 and retired as senior vice president and portfolio manager at the Rochester Division of Oppenheimer Funds in 2009.

A strong believer in a Liberal Arts education, Ron has served on the board of St John’s College for many years and encouraged both his sons to attend Liberal Arts Colleges.

Dan Fielding graduated from Hamilton in 2007 with a major in public policy.

He started his career at Bear Stearns and then JP Morgan before departing to pursue a nonprofit career. In 2012, Dan started as a Homeownership Associate at Habitat for Humanity New York City and rose to Director of the Homeownership Program by 2018 before becoming a founding team member and Director of Strategic Partnerships for a new venture, The Habitat NYC Community Fund. The Habitat NYC Community Fund is a Community Development Finance Institution that builds and preserves affordable housing in New York City and throughout New York State.

Dan has served Hamilton College as a volunteer in several capacities including a term as an Alumni Trustee from 2016 until 2020, and he is currently Regional President of the Alumni Association for New York City.
