The John Dayton Hamilton Scholarship

The John Dayton Hamilton Scholarship, established in 1987 by the Gebbie Foundation in honor of John D. Hamilton, Class of 1922, is awarded with preference given to students from Chautauqua County, New York.


John D. Hamilton was born in Pavillion, New York. He entered Hamilton in 1918 and joined the campus unit of the Students Army Training Corps. When World War I came to an end, John shifted his focus to playing football, soccer, and track. After graduating in 1922, he moved to Kenmore, New York, and worked as an assistant cashier at the State Bank. In 1928, he worked as an examiner for the New York State Banking Department and four years later was vice president of the Ontario County Trust Co. in Canandaigua.

In 1948, he became president of the Chautauqua National Bank in Jamestown, New York, and became chairman of the board in 1965. John retired four years later and devoted the rest of his life to civic affairs. In 1970, he assumed the presidency of the Gebbie Foundation, a local charitable institution dedicated to serving the medical and educational needs of Chautauqua County. In his lifetime, John also served as president of the Rotary Club, treasurer of the First Presbyterian Church, trustee of the Jamestown YMCA, and trustee of the Jamestown Community College. He died in 2000 at age 100.
