The Lascell-Sargent Family Scholarship

The Lascell-Sargent Family Scholarship, established in 2007 by David M. Lascell, Class of 1963, and his family in honor of the family's ties to Hamilton, is awarded with first preference given to students from Albion, New York, and with second preference to students from the rural counties of Western New York who demonstrate financial need.

 


The Lascell-Sargent Family Scholarship was established by David M. Lascell to honor his family’s ties to Hamilton. Born in Rochester, New York, David graduated with the Class of 1963. He majored in government and was a member of the Emerson Literary Society. He pursued graduate study at Cornell University, earning an LL.B. in 1966. David had a successful career as a commercial law and personal injury trial lawyer, becoming a partner at Harter Secrest and Emery LLP. He also worked in higher education law, successfully representing Grove City College before the Supreme Court in 1983, and served as legal counsel to several other colleges, including pro bono work for Hamilton.

David’s son, Daniel Lascell, was president of his class and a member of Chi Psi fraternity. He graduated from Hamilton in 1992 with a music major and went on to earn his J.D. from Cornell University School of Law in 1995. Like his father, Dan has enjoyed a distinguished legal career in commercial law and technology. >From 2004 to 2010, he was General Counsel for AmberPoint Inc., a software company, and from 2010-2016 he served as General Counsel at Appirio Inc., a tech company specializing in cloud-based software.

Dan’s younger brother Christopher graduated from Hamilton in 1996. He serves as vice president of Commerzbank AG, working in asset and liability management.

The Lascells' cousin, Cristen Sargent, graduated from Hamilton in 2001 with a degree in anthropology. She pursued a dual graduate degree at Washington University in Saint Louis, receiving both a master’s in social work and a J.D. Cristen is a child advocacy attorney with Voices for Children, a non-profit organization that supports disadvantaged children in St. Louis.
