The John P. and Marguerite McMaster Scholarship

The John P. and Marguerite McMaster Scholarship, established through a bequest from the estate of Marguerite McMaster, is awarded with preference given to students indicating a desire and intention to pursue a career in sociology.

This Fund was established in 2004 through a bequest from the estate of Marguerite McMaster, whose husband, John P. McMaster, was a fourth-generation Hamiltonian. The son of Humphrey McMaster, Class of 1876, grandson of Guy Humphrey McMaster, Class of 1847, and great grandson of David McMaster, Class of 1824, John arrived on College Hill in 1921 from Haverling High School, in Bath, New York. A member of Sigma Phi, he ran cross country and track and served on the Press Board, graduating from Hamilton in 1925.

After service in World War II as a U.S. Navy signalman in the Pacific theater, he  married Marguerite Clark. The couple took up residence in New York City where he began his paper sales career with Charles F. Hubbs and Co. Subsequently, he worked for George W. Millar Co. (now GWM Industries), retiring from that firm in 1985.
