The Brewer Family Scholarship

The Brewer Family Scholarship is awarded with preference given to students from Maryland or the Washington, D.C. area.

The fund was initiated in 2011 by Scott R. Brewer, Class of 1944, and his nephew, Robert G. “Robby” Brewer, Jr., Class of 1973, in recognition of the Brewer family legacy at Hamilton which includes Robby’s father, Robert, Sr., Class of 1948, and his son, Robert S. “Scott,” Class of 2009.

Scott and his brother, Robert, started at Hamilton four years apart. Scott, who matriculated in 1940, had his time on the Hill interrupted by two-and-a-half years of service as an Air Force radar mechanic during World War II. Leaving the Hill in 1943, he returned to finish his studies in 1946, by which time his brother, Bob, was at the mid-point of his own Hamilton career. While Scott graduated with a double major in history and public policy, Bob double majored in biology and psychology and went on to earn an M.D. from George Washington University. Both brothers joined Alpha Delta Phi, and Bob was also a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams. Scott went on to pursue a career, first in advertising, then in real estate; Bob became a physician, specializing in obesity surgery and nutrition, and open Brewer’s East Inn, a 300-seat restaurant in Virginia Beach, which he dubbed a “family enterprise.”

Bob’s son, Robby, followed his father to Hamilton where he was a member of the football team and graduated with a major in government. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Maryland, were he earned his J.D. Since 1995, he has been a partner in the law firm Lerch, Early & Brewer in Bethesda, Maryland.

Continuing the family tradition, Robby’s son, Robert S. “Scott,” graduated in 2009 with a major in geoscience. He is currently a captain in the United States Marine Corps.
