The Byne Scholarship

The Byne Scholarship was established in 1925 by George Austin Clark, Class of 1895, in memory of his sister Harriet Emily Clark Byne. It is reserved for a candidate for the Presbyterian ministry to be designated by the pastor and the session of the First Presbyterian Church of Utica, NY, or by the College.

George Austin Clark graduated from Hamilton in 1895. While a student on the Hill, he was an active member of the Emerson Literary Society and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. In 1898, he was awarded an honorary M.A. degree by the College. Following his time at Hamilton, George continued his passion for education by teaching throughout New York, including at high schools in Moravia, Dunkirk, and Geneva. In 1906, he began working in New Jersey as a principal for Boonton High School and, after 17 years, he continued his commitment to secondary education as the supervising principal of the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township schools.
