The Seymour Bernstein Scholarship

The Seymour Bernstein Scholarship is awarded with preference given to minority students studying chemistry or science. This scholarship was established by Richard Bernstein, Class of 1980, in honor of his father, Seymour Bernstein.


Seymour Bernstein was a renowned chemist, recognized for his research in synthetic estrogens, cerebrosides, smoke particles, blood plasma, and steroids. He majored in chemistry at Princeton, Class of 1936, where he also earned a Ph.D. He resided in New York City for over fifty years. A member of the American Chemical Society, the Endocrine Society, American Society of Biological Chemists, and Sigma Xi, Seymour was a much sought after lecturer by several universities including Princeton, Yale and Columbia. In 1978 he received the Rockland Chemical Society’s Distinguished Service to Chemistry Award. As an employee of American Cynamid, he held the record for most patents with over 200. Seymour was also an accomplished artist.

Seymour’s son, Richard, Class of 1980, is a Charter Trustee on the Hamilton Board.
