The Russell T. Blackwood

The Russell T. Blackwood Scholarship is awarded with preference given to male students from Pakistan, as a complementary fund to the Arnold L. Raphel Memorial Scholarship for female students from that country. This scholarship was established by Jaime E. Yordan, a member of the Class of 1971 and a Charter Trustee of the College, in honor of Russell T. Blackwood, Hamilton’s John Stewart Kennedy Professor of Philosophy Emeritus.

A native of Philadelphia, Professor Blackwood earned a Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth in 1948 and a Master’s degree from Colgate in 1951. He began teaching at Hamilton after receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1957. A professor of religious studies at Hamilton for fifty years, focusing on the philosophical aspects of religion, his approach in the classroom has been characterized as “Socratic, charming and disarming.” Professor Blackwood served as chair of the Hamilton philosophy department from 1965 to 1981. He was named Kennedy Professor in 1973 and directed the Asian Studies program from 1983 to 1990. Highly-respected and beloved, he died in 2007 at the age of 78.
