The William M. Bristol, Jr. Scholarships

The William M. Bristol, Jr. Scholarships are awarded to entering students who have strong academic records and have demonstrated their proficiency in oral and written communication and their commitment to citizenship. The grants are renewable. These scholarships were established in 1996 through a bequest from William M. Bristol, Jr., Class of 1917.

William M. Bristol, Jr. was born in Syracuse, New York. Known as Bill, he spent his high school days on the bank of the Hudson River at the Storm King School and, like his father before him, matriculated at Hamilton He was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity and the honorary society known as Pentagon. He also played football and participated in theatre. He graduated in 1917 with a bachelor’s degree in foreign language.

During World War I, Bill Bristol served as a driver for the French Army before enlisting in the U.S Army Motor Transport Service. In 1919 he joined Bristol-Myers, his family’s pharmaceutical and consumer products company, holding several management posts. With the onset of World War II, Bill focused his efforts on organizing the manufacture of health supplies in the Federal Office of Production Management. After the Allied victory in 1945, he returned to Bristol-Myers, retiring in 1959. Bill Bristol remained involved with Hamilton for many years, as both a Trustee and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
