The Andrew C. Scala Scholarship

The Andrew C. Scala Scholarship, established in 1988 by Robert A. Scala, Class of 1953, and his wife, Janet C. Scala, in memory of Robert's father, is awarded with preference given to a deserving student of Italian descent from Upstate New York.

Robert A. Scala was born in Utica, New York, to Andrew and Frances Scala. While at Hamilton, Bob was a member of Chi Psi fraternity and the ice hockey team. He graduated in 1953 and, having majored in chemistry and physics, pursued graduate studies in medicine at the University of Rochester, earning his Ph.D. in 1958. While at Rochester, he met and married Janet Eddy. They settled in New Jersey, where Bob was a senior research associate and scientific advisor for Exxon Biomedical Sciences from 1965 until his retirement in 1991. Bob is well known for “his work on the toxicity of gasoline components and chemical mixtures.” A prize named in his honor is awarded every year by Rutgers University, and The American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists awarded the Herbert E. Stokinger Award to Bob for his “significant contributions” to toxicology. He and Janet reside in Arizona.
