The John W. Uhlein '79 Scholarship

The John W. Uhlein '79 Scholarship, established in 2006, is awarded to students demonstrating promise and financial need with preference given to individuals who have participated in the Prep for Prep program, or a similar pre-collegiate educational leadership program.

John W. Uhlein III, an investment banker and attorney, graduated from Hamilton in 1979, having majored in government and history. While a student on the Hill, he was member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity. He later attended both Syracuse University’s School of Law and Whitman School of Management, earning his M.B.A. and J.D. in 1981. He has since led a distinguished career in financial services.

John became executive vice president of Ambac in 1993, and founded the company’s UK division in 2000, serving as its chairman until 2004. Under his leadership, Ambac UK was recognized with several industry awards for innovation. Since 2009, John has worked as managing principal and founder of Grenadier Capital LLC, and as a partner with RoundTable Financial Group LLC since 2011. He served on the board of “Prep for Prep,” and is currently a trustee at Hartwick College and a member of the advisory board at Syracuse Law. He married Catherine Maureen, a kindergarten teacher, in 1986. Three of their four children are also members of the Hamilton College family – Chase, Class of 2012, Maggie, Class of 2014, and Carrie, Class of 2015.
