The Dale P. Williams '49 Family Scholarship

The Dale P. Williams '49 Family Scholarship was established in 2001 by Dale P. Williams, Class of 1949, and his wife, Mary Lou, along with their children, Mitchell R. Williams, Class of 1978, and Suzanne Williams Vary, Class of 1982, and other family members and friends. Preference is given to students from Oneida, Herkimer or Lewis Counties, New York.


Dale P. Williams, a self-employed petroleum products distributor, was born in Utica, New York. At Hamilton, he was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity, the debate and international relations clubs and the soccer team, and assisted efforts to revive campus radio station WHCL.  Dale was elected to Delta Sigma Rho, the honorary forensic society, and graduated with an A.B., dual majoring in economics and history.  He married Mary Lou Montonna in 1951 before earning his M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1952. The couple had three children: Philip, Mitchell,Class of 1978, and Suzanne, Class of 1982.

Dale served in the U. S. Air Force from 1952 to 1953 in the Korean War and earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Upon returning home, he became vice president of Williams Oil Co., founded by his father in the 1920's. He grew the business while undertaking other enterprises, including the Williams Development Corporation and the Williams Energy Corporation, both located in Remsen, New York. He served as a board member for the Utica Symphony Orchestra and the Oneida County Industrial Development Corporation, as president of the Didymus Thomas Library in Remsen, as vice president of the Empire State Petroleum Association and as director of the Oil Fuel Institute of Central New York. Dale died in 1996.
