Bissell graduated from Hamilton in 1914 and earned his LL.B. degree from Harvard in 1917. That year, he entered the Army Training Camp at Fort Niagara, New York, and was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant. He sailed for France on March 21, 1918 and was highly involved in several military efforts in the final Allied offensive of World War I. He was badly wounded in his last battle, which resulted in the loss of his right eye. He was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart. Leet died in 1990 at age 95.
