After graduating in 1937, he earned an LL.B. degree from Fordham Law School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941, serving in North Africa and Italy as a Captain until his honorable discharge at the end of World War II. He and his wife, Norah McLean Clark, moved to Lincoln Park, New Jersey, in 1952, where William was elected for three-consecutive terms as mayor. William died in 1980 while traveling in Austria.
