The David Shove Hastings Scholarship

The David Shove Hastings Scholarship, established in 1946 by Mr. and Mrs. J. Murray Hastings in memory of their son David, a member of the Class of 1944, is awarded in certain years on a competitive basis to entering students who attended secondary school in Cayuga, Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego or Seneca Counties, New York.


David Shove Hastings grew up in Onondaga County, New York. He entered Hamilton in 1940 and soon joined the U.S. Army. In 1943, he was transferred to Norwich University in Vermont for training and in 1945, earned a commission as 2nd Lieutenant. He was a combat pilot in World War II. In April 1945, he was killed in action when his plane was shot down over Leipzig, Germany. He was posthumously awarded the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart. David’s father, J. Murray Hastings was a member of Hamilton's Class of 1910, his great-great-grandfather was a member of the class of 1826, and his brother John (Jack) was a member of the Class of 1944.  Katherine C. "Kate" Hastings, Class of 1982, is the daughter of John (Jack) '44 and Peggy Hastings.
