The Marjorie H. A. and Burke W. Drummond '31 Scholarship

The Marjorie H. A. and Burke W. Drummond ’31 Scholarship was established by Marjorie H. A. Drummond, widow of Burke W. Drummond ’31, mother of R. Steven Anderson ’66 and grandmother of Avery C. Anderson ’03. It is awarded with preference given to students from Auburn, NY or Cayuga County, NY.

Following his graduation from Hamilton with an interdisciplinary major in English literature and foreign languages, Burke W. Drummond, Class of 1931, went on to receive his J.D. from Albany Law School. He then joined the law firm of his father, Richard C.S. Drummond, Class of 1901, in Auburn, NY, where he worked for the remainder of his life.

An active community leader, Burke Drummond served on the boards of the United Way Fund, the YMCA, the Chamber of Commerce and the Cayuga Home for Children. He was a member, elder and trustee of the Westminster Presbyterian Church; election commissioner and chairman of the Cayuga County Republican Party; and instrumental in the creation of the Schweinfurth Art Center.

Marjorie H. A. Drummond’s first husband, Bror Anderson, was serving as a Captain in the Army during World War II when he became ill and passed away. As a young widow, she was left to raise her son, R. Steven Anderson, alone. A few years later she married Burke W. Drummond who was instrumental in encouraging his stepson to attend his alma mater.

R. Steven Anderson graduated from Hamilton in 1966 and went on to receive his J.D. from Cornell University, his mother’s and birth father’s undergraduate college. He currently practices law in New York City. His daughter, and Marjorie and Burke’s granddaughter, Avery, graduated from Hamilton in 2003.

In addition to raising Steven and Burke’s two daughters, Marjorie and Burke raised two additional daughters born of their marriage. Marjorie’s sister Dorothy married Hamilton alumnus Clair Babcock ’50.
This scholarship was established in 2012.
