Chloe and Olivia Chiota came to Hamilton four years ago as a package deal. The identical twins from Southborough, Mass., knew they wanted to play lacrosse together and be challenged academically. Several NESCAC colleges made their list, but one thing stood out about Hamilton.

Each year, a core of highly motivated Hamilton students can be found taking steps toward a career in healthcare. What are our pre-health students doing this summer? How did they land their internships, and what have they learned? And how does it all fit into what they envision for their futures?

Hamilton offers a plethora of opportunities for students to discover their passions. For Maura Calsyn ’95, it was a semester in Washington, D.C., that started her on her career path. Today she is deputy assistant secretary for health policy at the U.S. Department of Health Human Services (HHS) where her work deals with a wide variety of public health issues, including the long-term effects of COVID-19.

Courtney Hance has joined Hamilton as director of health professions advising. Here she talks about her experience and the advantages of a liberal arts education.

As an art history major on the pre-med track, Miriam Lerner ’24 believes that college is a time to explore your passions — even if they differ from your career goals. She has taken advantage of the open curriculum and at the same time, her interest in medicine has grown through her biology research at Hamilton. That research led her to a summer internship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Sandy Thai ’24 has spent the past few weeks researching lupus at the Masonic Medical Research Institute (MMRI). Her research could have an impact on people's lives, and that is an opportunity she is excited to have.
