Preventive Maintenance Mechanic

Position Summary:

The Preventive Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the preventive maintenance and safe compliance of all Hamilton College Buildings and Infrastructure.  This position is responsible for providing and monitoring equipment performance and maintaining the highest achievable building and infrastructure standards.

  • Develops and fosters a collaborative work environment among HVAC/Plumbing, Electrical shop employees and across Physical Plant in accordance with the Physical Plant Community Values documents.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all equipment.  Ensure that all equipment is inspected as outlined on the P/M program.
  • Inspects buildings on a regular basis to ensure appropriate upkeep and maintenance standards.
  • Performs inspections and documents conditions of all life safety devices on campus.
  • Reports any major malfunctions or damages of equipment to either the Foreperson or Manger of Technical Trades.
  • Keep appearance of equipment and mechanic room areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Be willing to continue education and training in given fields.
  • Performs the duties of a quick response mechanic on a daily bases along with P/M responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.


  • High School Diploma plus ten (10) years of mechanical experience and a minimum of five (5) years experience in mechanical environment.  Technical degree and/or professional certification in a relevant field preferred.  Knowledge of all types of HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical work, and institutional maintenance.  Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. 
  • Valid drivers' license required
  • Experience with Windows-based personal computer system is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of generally accepted mechanical best practices and working procedures, OSHA regulations, proper use of tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, problem solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to recognize and select appropriate materials for assigned projects
  • Ability to maintain cooperative, professional, and respectful working relationships with all employees, contractors, students, envendors, and business partners of the collage.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
