Visiting Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing Janelle Schwartz ’97 and Director of Outdoor Leadership Andrew Jillings were invited to attend Adirondack Day on April 27 at the New York State Legislative Office Building in Albany, N.Y.

The first installment of a bimonthly column by Janelle Schwartz ’97, visiting assistant professor of English and creative writing and general director of the Academic Program in the Adirondacks, was published on Nov. 16 in The Adirondack Almanack.

Students in Janelle Schwartz’s Reading the Extreme in World Adventure Narratives class are doing a lot more than reading this semester. Schwartz, a 1997 Hamilton graduate and visiting assistant professor of comparative literature, has teamed up with The Hamilton Outing Club (HOC) to bring experiential learning to her students.

During the two weeks before they returned to campus, some 143 Hamilton sophomores got a close look at possible careers as they took part in the third HamiltonExplore, sponsored by the Career Center.

On March 21, students in the Program in Washington traveled to Alexandria, Va., to meet with Alicia Davis Downs ’97 and Michael Dubke ’92 to discuss technology, media and the 2012 election.

Actor and screenwriter Nat Faxon ’97 won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants during the Feb. 26 Academy Awards. The award, which he received with co-writers Alexander Payne and Jim Rash, is given to the writer of a screenplay adapted from another source (usually a novel, play, short story, or TV show but also sometimes another film). Faxon, who majored in theatre at Hamilton, started comedy troupe Bobby Peru. He was profiled in the Spring 2007 Alumni Review article “Roll Credits.”

The Descendants, an adaptation of the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings with a screenplay by Nat Faxon '97, Jim Rash and Alexander Payne, recently won the Golden Globe for Best Picture Drama. The three were also nominated for Best Screenplay but ultimately lost out to Woody Allen.

In the spring, The Johns Hopkins University Press will publish Biomedical Computing: Digitizing Life in the United States by Joseph November '97.  The book explores both how computers changed how life is studied and how the life sciences contributed to computing.

Nat Faxon '97 has co-written George Clooney's upcoming movie The Descendants. The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings and tells the story of a land baron who tries to re-connect with his two daughters after a boating accident leaves his wife in a coma.  It was featured at Toronto's 2011 International Film Festival and will be released Nov. 18 in the United States.
